Local 2442 makes annual donations to several local and national charities, but more importantly donates many hours to physically working with the programs that we are partnered with. You may notice a Normal Firefighter ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, standing on a street corner collecting donations for The Muscular Dystrophy Association's "Fill the Boot" drive, or teaching fire safety with the Survive Alive House at a local school. Many of our members recognize a need to help serve our community whether we are on duty or not.
In the spring, phone calls are made on behalf of the Normal Firefighters to raise money to purchase fire safety materials for local schools, and to fund the Survive Alive House. Closer to Christmas season, phone calls are made to raise money for the Normal Firefighter's Christmas Rescue Run.
The Christmas Rescue Run is a partnership program between the Baby Fold and Local 2442 that helps families in need during Christmas. In 2013, Local 2442 supported 20 local families by buying Christmas presents and essential household items for struggling families in the Bloomington-Normal area. Our members spend a day shopping for gifts at Meijer, spend several days wrapping them, and then deliver the gifts to their respective families before Christmas. f you would like to make a donation to either program, or would like more information on fundraising with Local 2442, please contact a member of the executive board.
During Fire Safety Week, Normal Firefighters bring the Survive Alive House to local grade schools to educate community children on how to safely get out of a house fire.
