NFD Mourns Loss of Firefighter/Engineer Nick Whitfield, Jr.

NORMAL  – It is with deep regret and sadness that the Normal Fire Department announces the unexpected passing of Firefighter/Engineer Nick Whitfield on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. 

Firefighter Whitfield, a proud member of our Department, became a firefighter in November of 1995 and was assigned to Fire Station 2, Second Shift, as the Engineer of Engine 10.    Nick also was an active member of the Normal Fire Department Fire Investigation Team.

Fire Chief Mick Humer said, “This is a tremendous loss for our department both personally and professionally.  Nick was a talented fire investigator and a friend to all of us.   We ask that you keep his family in your prayers.”

At the request of the family, a semi-private visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, August 18, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, 1800 Eastland Drive, Bloomington, Illinois.  

The funeral service, including US Military and Fire Department honors, will be held Tuesday, August 19, at 10:00 am at Eastview Christian Church, 1500 Airport Road, Normal, Illinois.   A firefighter walk through will commence following funeral services.  Class “A” uniform is requested, if available, for all fire personnel.

Interment will follow in Peoria, Illinois.
