Special Olympics

Normal firefighters will spend the weekend providing EMS for the athletes in their dorms. We will be at 8 locations from 5pm to 7am. The local Firefighters have done this the last several years. Good luck to all the athletes.

Retired Lieutenant Lewis Gary “Zip” Trent Passes Away

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Retired Lieutenant Lewis Gary “Zip” Trent.

Lt. Trent served with the Normal Fire Department from 1970 to 1998, and after retirement worked at McLean County Centralized Communications Center for 10 years to create the computer aided run plans and communication procedures that are in use today throughout the county.

Three Alarm Blaze Heavily Damages Apartment Complex on Kenwood Court

NORMAL  – A massive blaze this afternoon tore through a 6-unit apartment complex on Normal’s north side, and while no injuries were reported, four families were displaced.

Normal Fire Department responded to the report of a fire in an apartment on the second floor at 104 Kenwood Court just before 2:00pm.      The first arriving engine company reported heavy fire in an apartment on the second floor and called for a second alarm.     The second alarm calls in all off-duty Normal Firefighters and requests an engine company from Bloomington Fire Department.      

Assistant Chief John Grussing Announces Retirement from NFD

NORMAL  – With over 26 years of service to the Normal Fire Department, Assistant Chief John Grussing has announced his retirement effective May 2, 2014.

A reception and retirement ceremony will be held in his honor at Normal Fire Department Headquarters on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 2:00 pm.  All are welcome to attend.  Casual dress or duty uniforms are preferred in lieu of formal dress uniforms for firefighters.  

Helping a Hero Benefit for Scott Bettisch

Scott Bettisch

To many people, Scott Bettisch has been a hero helping those in need for many years in Downs and around Mclean County.  Scott is the EMS Chief in Downs, and has also worked with Bloomington Township FD, Hudson FD, Mclean FD, Leroy, Lifeline Mobile Medics and has also taught numerous classes around the county and also at Heartland College. Last year, Scott was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer and is undergoing an aggressive treatment plan of chemotherapy. Scott, with his wife Janice and son Jon, are fighting this battle with strength and determination.
